“DO THE RIGHT THING” (Tottenham)

Inspired by the 1989 masterpiece by Spike Lee, this project recognizes that while Tottenham is a complex landscape, its greatest strength is its super-diversity. With over 180 languages spoken in the borough and up to 80% of students speaking English as an additional language, Tottenham is the ultimate “global village.”
Our mission is to harness this immense energy by creating a regular filming project. We aim to bring these “children of the world” together, not just to train them for a career, but to give them a platform where they can engage with their community and make a lasting positive impact.

The Vision: “Café Lemon”
The heart of this project is a sitcom-style series set in Café Lemon on West Green Road. Much like the iconic gathering spots in Friends, Café Lemon serves as the “third space” where young creatives from every background imaginable gather. Here, they turn their raw, lived experiences into film, using the camera to speak a universal language.

Community Benefits & Reflection
This project goes beyond simple “youth clubs” by offering a high-energy, high-stakes alternative to street culture.

  • A Release Valve for Energy: Young people possess an abundance of physical and creative energy. Without a constructive outlet, this energy can be misdirected. Filming is a demanding, high-energy process that keeps them “busy” in a way that feels like play but builds discipline.
  • Cultural Translation: In an area where 130 languages are spoken in schools, film acts as the bridge. By collaborating on a script or a scene, a student from a Spanish-speaking home and a student from a Somali-speaking home find common ground, reducing the “toxic” misunderstandings that can lead to friction.
  • Economic & Social Pride: By filming on locations like West Green Road, the project shines a cinematic, professional light on the neighborhood. It turns “the streets” from a place of perceived danger into a place of art and storytelling, boosting local pride and showing the public the true, creative face of Tottenham.
  • A “Pilot” for Peace: This isn’t just a hobby; it is a social intervention. By providing an environment that is more supportive and engaging than a traditional school setting, we offer a path away from gangs. Success here creates a blueprint, a “pilot project” that could be replicated in diverse cities worldwide.
